About Dr. Irene van Kessel

Many years ago I began to feel a profound yearning in my heart to come to a more comprehensive understanding as to the vastness of our universe and my Being in it. I began to actively search for and develop an inner awareness of: Who am I? I came to realize that I am connected to and part of an integrated whole, an expansive spiritual oneness.

I consciously focused my awareness inward. To activate and awaken my spirit within and bring my spiritual Self into fuller consciousness, I read Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, Plotinus, books on Aboriginal and African philosophies, as well as Blavatsky, Jung, Roerich, books on Theosophy, Agni Yoga, and innumerable others.

My conscious inward probing in time led me to Nanette Hucknall, the founder of Higher Self Yoga. This spiritual teaching changed my life. I have come to know how to bring my Higher Self into my aware consciousness and how to use my wise Being within to overcome challenges and transmute characteristics that impede my spiritual growth. I have come to know how to open my heart to higher knowledge and wisdom, and how, working with my mind and heart, balance can be achieved in education and everyday life. My path is one of self-awareness, an inner search for enlightenment toward wholeness, a striving toward the ultimate goal of finding the true meaning of God-Consciousness.

Along the journey I returned to university to complete my graduate studies. Throughout this process I became consciously aware how the emphasis on the intellectualization of education in the absence of spiritual aspirations has created an imbalance in Western education. While engaging in my studies and presenting in classes, I incorporated higher knowledge and wisdom into all my work in the hope to open awareness toward wholeness in education and everyday life. The hope of integrating and balancing revealed wisdom with intellectual knowledge in higher education inspired and encouraged me to create this website.

Biography

I received my Ph.D. and M.A. from the Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education, OISE, University of Toronto, and my Honors B.A. in Sociology from the Department of Sociology, York University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

My work explores the nature of inner life wisdom and its relationship to education. Specifically, I examine an approach to education that balances acquired intellectual knowledge with higher knowledge and wisdom. In this context, I examine the concept of the Higher Self, who we really are, and how this source can be brought into aware consciousness and integrated into whole life education and whole life living experiences.

I have been studying and practicing Higher Self Yoga for over twenty years. Concurrently, I have been a participant and facilitator of weekly Toronto Higher Self Yoga classes as well as taking part in yearly Higher Self Yoga retreats. I have also held leadership positions at International Training in Communication, an organization dedicated to developing leadership, oratory, and organizational skills. My current interest is integrating Higher Self into higher education.
